Musk’s Starlink to disrupt ISP market as hope rises for 25m unserved Nigerians

ISP is an acronym of Internet Service Provider. Following the operational licences handed to Space Exploration Technologies Corp (SpaceX), owned by world’s richest man, Elon Musk, to operate in Nigeria, there appears to be hope of connectivity for the about 114 access gaps (communities without telecoms services) in Nigeria. Data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) showed that the 114 access gaps in the country currently house some 25 million Nigerians without basic telephony services. It must also be stated that where there are coverage currently, telecoms services have not been optimal. Besides, the coming of Starlink is expected to boost Federal Government’s efforts, as enshrined in the National Broadband Plan 2020 to 2025, to reach 70 per cent broadband penetration, covering 90 per cent of the population by 2025. Elon Musk’s Starlink licensed to operate in Nigeria

Elon Musk, the billionaire tech entrepreneur, has announced that his satellite Internet service, Starlink, has been granted approval to begin operations in Nigeria. Musk made this known via his Twitter account on Friday, stating that Starlink had been licensed to operate in Nigeria and Mozambique. “Starlink approved by Nigeria and Mozambique,” he simply wrote. This was confirmed by the Nigerian Communications Commission in a statement where it was revealed that the service had indeed received two licenses to commence operations in the country, Nairametics reports. The NCC revealed that the company received “the International Gateway license and Internet Service Provider license, and will be trading as Starlink Internet Services Nigeria Ltd.” According to the commission, the International Gateway and the ISP licenses have 10-year and 5-year tenure respectively.
